URGENT NEED FOR VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR AND VOLUNTEERS

You may have seen Steve Burgess’s recent post and the lack of volunteers to open and maintain our trails. Not one of our Members (read YOU) showed up. There was a comment from one Club Member that we did not contact him. Also, another comment that not everyone sits around and reads Facebook.

There is a fact that: too much is being done by too few for too many Club Members who like to ride but do not want to help. I also know that a number of Members have offered to help but we do not contact them.

We are in desperate need of a Volunteer with some social media skills who likes to talk to people to work with the Board and coordinate those people who have offered to help. Facebook is not working. We need fresh ideas as to how to make our Club a community where people want to be involved. This goes beyond trail maintenance to other fun events we can hold to involve our Members.

As Steve Burgess points out the people who are currently maintaining your trails are getting tired (read fed up). We opened the trails and we cleaned up after the last storm. Who is going to clean up after the heavy snow we just received. Maybe no one!!

A good start is for someone to work with the Board to develop an effective communication plan. Then we can ask for help when we need it from those few other Members who have offered to help. Would one of you please volunteer to take this on? Bring a friend and make it an enjoyable part of being a Member of YOUR snowmobile club.

New Trail Into Carp Ready To Go

On Sunday two new volunteers Ryan Grassie and Jake Sinclair worked with me and Steve Munro and helped open the new trail from W20 into Carp. Steve Munro worked with land owners to put the trail in place and brought out his backhoe to clear the trail and put in a pipe.

Thank you all.

This trail has been built to keep snowmobiles off the ACTIVE RAIL LINE into Carp. We have posted the railway as a NO SNOWMOBILE ROUTE. If snowmobilers use the railway we may loose all our railway crossings west of Highway 417. This in effect would shut down many of our trails and access out of West Carleton.

Please STAY OFF THE RAILWAY.

If you have time for a beer you have time to take the trail. There are a number of restaurants and businesses near to the snowmobile parking area that is being provided by Ridge Rock Brewing an the Karson Group.

Enjoy your trip to Carp when we get snow.

Signage Training – CORRECTION: Dec. 4

Who would have thought we would have this much snow stay on the ground this early in the year. I hope it stays until April. I had my first ride but didn’t get out of the yard.

Our Signage Training Course is being presented on December 4, 2018 at 6:00 prior to the regular Board Meeting at the Community Centre in Kinburn. If you haven’t volunteered to help sign some of our trails this is an excellent opportunity to find out what it’s all about!

Don’t forget that OFSC requires that all Trail Coordinators receive Signage Training at least every 3 years. There are a number of new people on the list this year that require training and others that need a refresher course. I hope to see you there.

Also we have lost a few people this year and are looking for Trail Coordinators for the following sections.

Trail Status – Not Available

The snow is still falling out there – beautiful! It’s looking like a great season ahead! But remember that conditions are still very unsafe for riding and absolutely no trails in Ontario are open. Your volunteers have been and are currently working hard to get signage in and find reroutes for trails that have been closed off from last year. Traveling on unopened trails is trespassing on private property and trespass charges can be laid, trails can be closed, but most importantly it is unsafe! And we all want to see you out there once we are able to get them open.

Signage Training Nov. 1, 2016

Sledding is just around the corner and early indicators are pointing toward a great sledding season this year! In preparation for the installation of trail signage and markers, WCSTA will be holding its annual trail signage course on November 1, 2016, 6:00-7:00 PM in the Conference Room* at the Kinburn Community Centre. Correct signage is the cornerstone of the club’s risk management program and critical to safe sledding on our trails. The trails cannot be opened until this important work is completed.

If you are new to trail signage this season: a) THANKS for volunteering; and b) please plan to attend this course. Note that preparing the trails depends entirely on volunteers like you. If you just want to help out but aren’t sure where to start, feel free to come to the training and we will happily pair you up with an experienced installer.

First Meeting of the Season

Please join us at the West Carleton Snowmobile Trails Association September club meeting – to be held on Tuesday September 6th, 7:00pm, in the board room at the Kinburn Community Centre (doors to the left of the main entrance).

Important changes are coming to snowmobiling in Ontario to ensure its sustainability. The first phase of this was the Framework for Change, which has been implemented over the last few years. The next phase, “More on the Snow (MOTS)” is being voted on at the OFSC AGM in September. Your understanding of these changes is very important to us and at our next WCSTA meeting on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 we will be discussing how we want our delegates to vote. If you can, please make a special effort to come to our meeting to learn more about MOTS.

The club is currently looking for volunteer coordinators, people to help with events, brushing, signage and other volunteer positions. Have any special skills that you might be willing to share to help make our club, our trails and our events even better? Please contact us.

Signage and pre-season trail work will also be key topics at this meeting. If you are one of the many people who adopted a section of trail last season, or if you would like to find out how you can help get our trails ready for the upcoming season we encourage you to join us. We hope to see you there!

New A trail signing work party – Saturday Dec. 5th

Where: Timmins Road 1 KM off Kinburn Side Road (near Pakenham)

Hello Sledders.

We need some help putting trail signs up on our brand new A trails that was just cut. Amazing new section of trail. Come out and help for 2-3 hours. Meet at Timmins Road just off Kinburn Side Road. We will send one group around to Rock Coady Trail to start at the other end after we meet up. We will have all supplies.

Come and walk the new trail !

Four wheelers and walking in will work great, a little bit of mud at Timmins entrance but great at the other end.

Bring cordless drill with robertson bit. Some water on trail so wear rubber boots.

Now until Nov. 15 businesses have the opportunity to promote themselves and support our local sledding community by advertising with West Carleton Snowmobile Trails Association and OFSC. Get your ad on our 2015-2016 Trail Guide, a sign along local trails, or advertise online across the province as a point of interest on the OFSC Interactive Trail Guide!

Snowmobilers love to support businesses that support them, and in the 2013-2014 season it is estimated that expenditures of snowmobilers in Ontario were upwards of 850 million dollars.

Opportunities to advertise for the 2015-16 season start as low as $75, but ad space for the maps will fill up fast so book your spot now! Remember, all ad and Point of Interest (POI) submissions must be received no later than Nov. 15, or while space lasts.
